The first day of a new hire is one of the most stressful events. Effective onboarding should focus on welcoming them into the organization and making them feel comfortable. It also allows the organization to make a good lasting impression by creating an environment where they feel valued.

Organizations can offer new hires employee kits and free lunch or breakfast on their first day. A human resource professional should be assigned as a mentor to personally greet them and answer all their queries. A detailed orientation should be conducted with human resource management as it signifies the start of a relationship between employee and employer.

After the orientation, they should be taken on an office tour where they can be well introduced to the company. Furthermore, on this day the company’s expectations and objectives should be introduced.

It is very important that by the end of the first day all his legal and required documentation are completed and they have a clear idea about their roles and responsibilities and companies’ culture and working environment. Their satisfaction, engagement, productivity, and motivational level must be highest. And they should feel welcomed and valued.

The objective of onboarding is to provide the employee with the encouragement and support they need to become productive. The first week is most vulnerable as a new hire may start to have second thoughts regarding their decision.

Research tells us that 40% of resignations may occur in the first month. Therefore, the first week should be about reassuring the new employee regarding the right decision they have made.

The journey of the employee should start with both manager and employee being on the same page. This will be beneficial if the new hires have any lingering doubts about the employer. They should be allowed to conduct open communication with the team and managers and can ask as many questions as possible.

The efforts of the first week continue onto the rest of the week for the month. Employees must be made aware of the training opportunities that are planned for them which must be reviewed by the manager for any necessary changes.

The assigned mentor should work diligently with them and provide all the information they need to make his transition smooth, efficient, and effective. Conduct healthy communication with the new hire more often to make them feel secure.

By the end of the first month, it is vital for human resources management to gather new hires’ feedback regarding the onboarding process conducted so far. This feedback and recommendations should be taken very seriously so that the required changes and updates are made. 

First Months to Next Months

The employee onboarding process does not end in the first month. As we move forward towards the first three months it is very vital to keep them engaged with challenging work. Studies tell us that unchallenging work may put employees at a greater risk of resigning.

Their quarterly goals must be well communicated and agreed upon. Human resource management should check in with the new employee depending upon their role.

After this, they should also conduct an informal meeting with the manager to find out how well the new hire is performing and how they can make their transition effortless. They must use many techniques and ways which will be helpful in this regard.

First Year

This is the time when all the efforts of HR and the department head can be seen through the commitment and passion the new employee has for their work. By the end of this year, they can now also come to ease as they are successful in not only retaining an employee for the whole year but also making them productive.

Therefore, the first service anniversary is the time to celebrate the work birthday. Organizations may assume that is time-consuming and costly, but it has a lasting impact on the employee. The employee will now be sure of the right decision they made by accepting the offer. And will continue to work enthusiastically towards achieving their organization’s goals as well.
